National Trail Mix Day

If the weather permits a hike, this would be the perfect opportunity to celebrate some trail mix.  I personally quite enjoy the classic peanut/raisin/M & M combo.  They all compliment each other quite well.  But for those with allergies, or aversions to sugar, there are other options.

Eat Outside Day

Picnic!!!  Backyard BBQ!!!  Eating takeout on the front porch!!!  So many options, so little time.

Coming Attractions: September!, National Cherry Popover Day

August 30 is...

National Toasted Marshmallow Day

The perfect toasted marshmallow, those others may disagree, is perfectly golden and gooey.  None of this lighting the thing on fire nonsense.  Golden or nothing!  I might get a t-shirt that says that....

Get a Slinky Day

What goes downstairs alone or in pairs?  A slinky!  Get one!

August 29 is...

More Herbs, Less Salt Day

A day dedicated to wellness.  Herbs are better for your health than salt, so use them to flavor your foods rather than resorting to salt.  You'll feel better - promise.

Chop Suey Day

Chop Suey...mmm...There has been some debate as to whether this is a Chinese or an American dish.  Frankly I don't think it really matters.  Either way, it's delicious.  For those not interested in the food aspect, here's a song.

Lemon Juice Day

Cures ills, adds flavor to foods, expires quickly.  What more could you want?  I just especially love buying lemon juice in those little lemon-shaped bottles.  That's cool.

National Cherry Turnover Day

These are probably one of my favorite desserts, and Arby's may have one of the best ones known to man.  I get one almost every time I go.

Tall Building Day

Find the tallest one in your area, climb to the top, and enjoy the view!

Coming Attractions: More Herbs, Less Salt Day; Chop Suey Day; Lemon Juice Day

August 27 is...

National Pots De Crème Day

These look so delicious and fun!  I might just have to buy a little set of pots just to make this dessert!

Banana Lover's Day

I don't know that I'm a banana lover, but I am a banana liker.  I like banana's, banana bread, banana licuado, even banana flavored oatmeal.  Good times.

Petroleum Day

I guess we can celebrate the fact that though gas prices are still completely outrageous, at least they've started to go down instead of continuing to rise.

Coming Attractions: National Cherry Turnover Day, Tall Building Day

August 26 is...

National Cherry Popsicle Day

Probably my favorite of the popsicle flavors.  I believe I'll be indulging.  Mmmm....

Kiss and Make Up Day

Oh, I am so all over this.  If anyone feels they need to make up with me for any reason, I'll probably be all for it!

Soy Beans Day

Less exciting than kissing, but probably more nutritious.  Celebrate the soy!

Coming Attractions: National Cherry Popsicle Day, Horse Shoe Day

August 24 is...

National Peach Pie Day

My dad makes what might be the most incredible fresh peach pie known to man.  Too bad I don't still live with him, I'd have to convince him to make me one.  *sigh*

Knife Day

I don't really know what this one's all about.  Celebrate your cutlery, I suppose.  Just don't do anything dangerous or illegal with it.

Can Opener Day

What's with the celebration of utensils?  Do these ones not get enough attention or something?

Coming Attractions: Kiss and Make Up Day, Soy Beans Day

August 23 is...

National Sponge cake Day

Mmmmm....sponge cake.

Hair Dye Day

I've dyed my hair a number of times.  It's always fun to add a little spunk to my meager crop of hair.  Perhaps I'll try something truly wild this time around...

Go ahead...I dare you.

Be An Angel Day

I'm a big advocate of helping out your fellow man - even in small ways.  So give a smile, lend a helping hand, do a good deed.  Someone needs an angel today and that angel could be you!

Coming Attractions: National Spongecake Day, Hair Dye Day

August 21 is...

National Spumoni Day

Never had the stuff myself, but it involves ice cream, so I'm sure I'd love it.

National Pecan Torte Day

More pecans.  Get ready for a sore tongue.  These, however, sound delicious so they're probably worth it.

Distilled Water Day

I've never gotten sick from water...that I can remember...but I guess it couldn't hurt to purify it.

Coming Attractions: Eat a Peach Day, Be An Angel Day

Lemonade Day

Hooray for lemonade!  I had a stand once.  It was good times, if not at all profitable.  I think I'll make myself some fresh-squeezed stuff.  mmm...

National Chocolate Pecan Pie Day

I'm not the hugest fan of pecan pie, but chocolate pecan pie might just do the trick.  Hmm...

National Radio Day

Radio may or may not be becoming obsolete, but until that final judgment is made, turn yours on, tune it in, and rock out to some good tunes - and tons of advertising. *sigh*

Potato Day

I guess we have to support Idaho somehow.

Hot and Spicy Food Day

I happen to know of a delightful peruvian dish called "Papas a la Huancaína".  It's spicy and uses potatoes!  How appropriate!  Enjoy!

August 17 is...

National Vanilla Custard Day

In Chinatown - any chinatown really - go find a chinese bakery, or go to dim sum and order their custard tarts.  They're probably the most amazing food known to man.  That's how I want to celebrate.

National Thriftshop Day

I think this is now my new official favorite holiday.  I LOVE thriftshopping. And I am dang good at it.  Bargains follow me around like moths to a flame.  The stuff you find at thrift stores is just to die for.  And that is all.

#2 Pencil Day

We've voted, and our preferred activities for #2 pencil day are 1 - dress up like a pencil, 2 - take a scantron test, 3 - poke people with a pencil (though this was a decidedly un-nice thing to do), 4 - get lead poisoning.  A full day of activities.

August 15 is...

Lemon Merengue Pie Day

I don't really like merengue.  I don't get the point of it.  But whatever, I do like lemon pie, so I'll celebrate anyway.

National Relaxation Day

It's important to have relaxation time.  And everyone does that in their own way, so find yours and indulge!

National Failures Day

Every failure is just an opportunity for improvement.  So improve away!

Coming Attractions: Bratwurst Festival

August 14 is...

National Creamsicle Day

Whoever discovered that oranges taste so good with cream is not only a culinary genius, but a genius because of the fact that citrus fruits will curdle milk faster than you can say "Bob's your uncle."  I praise his daring ambition and will enjoy a creamsicle  in his honor.

Happy Feet Day

Keeping your feet healthy and happy is important.  After all, you really only get two and they should last you your whole life.  There's probably not a more exercised part of the body than the feet.  So get a pedicure, massage, foot rub, foot scrub, whatever.  But pamper your feet today and they'll continue to take care of you for years to come. :)

National Filet Mignon Day

I think it appropriate that this most coveted of meat cuts gets its very own day for celebration.  I think I'll go out to a nice restaurant and enjoy one.

August 12 is...

Julienne Fries Day

This phrase always makes me think of the beginning of Aladdin, but I digress.  Julienne fries, unexcitingly enough, are just regular french fries.  Julienning refers to the way the potato is cut, namely, in long thin strips.  But whatever, eat some fries guilt-free!  Hooray!

Middle Child's Day

Finally, some recognition!  For those of you (myself included, to some extent) suffering from middle child syndrome, go out and get yourself some ice cream, or julienne fries, and celebrate your middleness!  I'm technically not a middle child being #2 of 4, but I'm about as middle as it gets in my family.  I'm the middle of three boys, and then came the baby girl.

National Raspberry Tart Day

I like cherry tarts better myself, but nothin' wrong with a little change now and again.  For excellent raspberry tarts and an evening of fun I recommend the Utah Shakespearean Festival.  Seriously.

Presidential Joke Day

I mean, why should today be different than any other day, right?

August 10 is...

National Banana Split Day

Nothin' wrong with adding a little fruit to your sugar-induced coma.  If anything it makes one feel more health conscious.  So go for it!

National S'mores Day

Some interesting facts about this most delightful of treats.

Lazy Day

I think this day should be closer to the middle of summer, not right at the end when you have to get back out of that summer coma and start functioning again.  For real.

Take An Aspirin Day

Maybe this is to help with the stress of said awakening.  And it's also heart-healthy which is really never a bad thing.

National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Night

Now this is a big thing, especially if your harvest was extra big.  I think it could be fun, and I may buy some zucchini just to try it.

August 7 is...

National Raspberries In Cream Day

I love pretty much any kind of fruit in cream.  It's really nature's perfect combination.  And you don't need lots of frills to make it delicious.

Sea Serpent Day

A mythological creature that's worth celebrating...I think.  If you can't think of anything else to do, just watch the 2nd and 3rd "Pirates" movies.  There's a sea creature that's semi-serpentine.

August 6 is...

National Root Beer Float Day

I think today might be the day to try my idea for the ultimate root beer float.  Nielson's frozen custard (one of the top 100 foods in America, available only in Utah) and A&W root beer straight from the tap.  I think it'd be heavenly.  I guess we'll find out.

Wiggle Your Toes Day

Go ahead, wiggle 'em.  I dare you.

Try Hypnosis Day

I tried it once.  I don't know that I was actually hypnotized, but it was fun to be in the show.  One thing I do remember is that I had to take a bite out of a lemon that we were told was an orange, and I don't remember it being sour when I bit into it.  Who knows?

National Watermelon Day

Yesterday was your day if you like watermelon.  Now it's a day for the fruit itself.  Enjoy it!  With or without the seeds.

National Park Day

I'm a bit confused on this one.  Is a day to celebrate national parks, or a day to celebrate parks as a nation?  Either way it's a good excuse to get outside for a bit and enjoy nature - whether in a city park or a national park.

Coming Attractions: National Lasagna Day, Twins Day Festival

August 2 is...

National Ice Cream Soda Day

Not to be confused with Ice Cream Soda Day.  But who's really going to complain about two days to celebrate ice cream sodas?

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day

That's a lot of ice cream for one day, but something tells me you can handle it.  I know I can.  Plus ice cream sandwiches are the bomb!

Watermelon Lover's Day

I love watermelon.  But only the fruit.  Watermelon-flavored candy is among my least favorite.

I've never had raspberry cream pie, but it sounds downright delicious!  Maybe I'll make one.  I've got some free time on my hands...
