March 31 is...

National Clams on the Half-Shell Day

Clams are not my favorite. Don't know that I'll be celebrating this one, but for those of you who want to - go ahead.

Oranges and Lemons Day

Hooray for citrus fruit! Make orange juice, lemon pie, mandarin salad - whatever. Just use oranges and lemons. I recommend finding a good candy store and buying candied oranges and lemons that still have the rinds attached - especially if they're dipped in chocolate. mmmm.....

Bunsen Burner Day

I don't really know how to celebrate this one if you don't have access to a chemistry lab. Maybe just let your local chemistry geek know about the day so they can enjoy it to the fullest. The rest of us can just be grateful we don't have to deal with noxious chemicals.

Birthday Roll:

The coolest little buddy in the world, Tanner McGuire, celebrates his 14th today.

March 30 is...

Turkey Neck Soup Day

I find this odd.  You'd think this would be a few days after thanksgiving...or maybe even Christmas.  But at the end of March?  I dunno.  Here's a recipe regardless.

I Am In Control Day

I am.  But this seems like one of those things where if you need affirmation of the fact, it's probably not true.  But I don't need affirmation, I just appreciate it.  So I'll be celebrating by napping, doing laundry, and not letting certain people come to my brownie party.

-sorry for the lack of upkeep these past couple days.  Crazy weekend.  Good times.

March 29 is...

Lemon Chiffon Cake Day

Can't say that I've ever even heard of lemon chiffon cake, but it sounds delightful. I believe I'll try some.

Have a Pickle Day

Please do, just don't get the juice in your eye.

March 28 is...

Something on a Stick Day

This is the stickiest situation since sticky the stick bug got stuck on a sticky bun.  And that, my friends, is quite sticky.  So eat a corndog, some cotton candy, a sucker, a carmel apple or whatever else you feel like putting on a stick.  It's handy food for walkin' around.

National Black Forest Cake Day

Oh my.  I can't even begin to explain how much I like Black Forest Cake.  So I won't even try.  But here's a recipe, and a little info.

Garden Seeds Day

Uhh...plant a garden.  Spring has sprung, after all.  Here's an easy home garden that's fun for kids.

National "Joe" Day

Coffee?  That famous diner that everyone always tells you to eat at?  Guys named Joe?  No one knows for sure.  Another ambiguous holiday allowing us more freedom in our celebrations.  I, for one, don't drink coffee and don't know of anyplace to eat named "Joe's," so I'll be calling my friend Joe to wish him a happy Joe Day.  And I hope you all celebrate to your hearts content in whatever manner suits you best.

Cherry Blossom Day

This, of course, coincides with Washington DC's Cherry Blossom Festival - and indeed is probably the reason for the day.

March 26 is...

Red Shoe Day

This is one of my top favorite holidays of the year.  I LOVE red shoes.  So if you have them, wear them.  If not, buy them and then wear them.  Here's a funny video about shoes - some of which are red.  But it's got some language, so be warned.

Make Up Your Own Holiday Day

If you want to celebrate it, today's the day.  Even if there's an official day, today you can celebrate it early, late, twice, or in Spanish!  Make it up yourself - have fun.

Spinach Festival Day

Popeye would be proud.  I like spinach, personally.  In a salad, on a sandwich, in a dip with artichoke - it's just delightful.  So get those creative juices flowing and spinach up your life!

National Chocolate Covered Raisins Day

Birthday Roster:

I missed a couple over the last few weeks.

The coolest sister-in-law ever had her birthday March 5

My friend Tara and I have a list of favorite B-list stars that we occasionally joke about/keep tabs on/strive to run into at Disney parks.  I'd like to give you all the opportunity to celebrate their birthdays.  I think they deserve it.  If you have any B-list birthdays you'd like me to mention, feel free.  Here are this months:
Chuck Norris was born March 10.  I think it should be a national holiday.
Rob Lowe - March 17

Easter

It's early this year, but nonetheless important.  Do your thing, and don't focus too much on the candy and eggs.

National Chip and Dip Day

I love chips and dip of all kinds.  I'm an equal opportunity dipper.  Chips and salsa, onion dip, ranch dip, random dip - I love it all.  Here's a recipe for our family's favorite chip dip:

1 brick of cream cheese
1 24 oz. carton of cottage cheese
1 bunch of green onions chopped

Combine all the ingredients, add salt and pepper to taste, enjoy.

National Melba Toast Day

I've never had melba toast.  Maybe I'll try it today.  Here's how to make it.

National Goof-off Day

I'm blaming this for my tardiness in posting.  Nuff said.

Roller Coaster Day

I think at this time last year I was on an emotional roller coaster.  Luckily this year I can celebrate by going on an actual roller coaster...though I probably won't seeing as how the nearest open theme park is several hours away.  My family, though, is celebrating in style at the happiest place on earth.  Wish I was with them.  I suppose I'll have to settle for finding a friend with Roller Coaster Tycoon.  *sigh*

Fragrance Day

Smell it up!  There are so many delightful fragrances to choose from.  Whether you're into the high-priced cologne/perfume, or you just like scented lotion, get your aroma out there and be noticed.  I know that there's nothing quite like a good-smelling person.  Just brightens up my day.

It's Spring Day

And it is!  Perhaps I'm lulling myself into a false sense of security by celebrating too early, but after a brutal winter, I'm ready for a little warmth and sunshine.  And I don't even live in Canada!  Maybe I'll be brave and bust out my open-toed footwear.  Flip-flops?  Sandals?  Chaco's?  Maybe it's still too early for that, but I think I can at least officially put my winter coats away.  And I will...Oh, and I don't advise you to celebrate by starting your spring cleaning...unless you're into that sort of thing.

March 20 is...

Barbie Doll Day

Yes, an entire day for that iconic piece of playful americana.  As Aqua so deftly observes  "You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere; imagination, life is your creation."  The possibilities with Barbie are endless.  I mean, what more could you want when you own a pink car and a giant pink house?  So dig up your old dolls, play with your kid's dolls, or maybe just reminisce a bit.  Personally I'll be designing my own line of modern day Barbies including West Side Barbie complete with giant hoop earrings and removable pregnant belly, and varicose veins Barbie.

Proposal Day

Get down on your knee and get 'r done.  Just pop the question.  Or propose something a little less commitment intensive like a game of air hockey.

Festival of Extraterrestrial Abductions Day

Wow, that's a mouthful.  But why not?  I imagine these are the same people that frequent Renaissance Festivals and the like.  We can all celebrate with stories of how bright the lights were along with the finer points of anal probing.  I'll let you discover your own cache of stories, but in the event an abduction happens to you, here are some helpful tips to save your self from the wandering hands of an other-worldly visitor.

National Ravioli Day

I love ravioli.  Really, I love almost anything Italian.  Once I had butternut squash ravioli with a delightful sprinkling of chocolate over the top.  You might think it an odd combo, but it really was delightful.  There are endless options for your ravioli fun, so I'll again let you discover your own.  If you're not in the mood to cook, might I suggest the Ravioli di Portobello at Olive Garden.

March 19 is...

Poultry Day

It's a day for the white meat.  I'm a huge fan of poultry.  Love it.  Can't get enough of it.  And that's all I have to say.

National Chocolate Carmel Day

I don't know if this means a carmel-filled chocolate, chocolate flavored carmels, or perhaps a person by the name of Carmel who happens to be dark-skinned.  I'll let you all use your imagination here.  I'm just happy we get to celebrate something with chocolate involved.

Let's Laugh Day

Personally I think every day should be a day to laugh, but as long as we're having a day to celebrate I plan to go full-force.  I want to laugh until I cry.  It's a great ab workout.  So find some things to laugh at.  Here are some of my favorite places that have made me laugh out loud:

March 18 is...

Oatmeal Cookie Day

Probably my least favorite of the cookie family.  Mostly because there's no chocolate involved.  Though I don't know that I've ever been disappointed in an oatmeal cookie.  Perhaps that's because my expectations are rather low where oatmeal cookies are concerned.  Anyway, today might be the day for me to kindle a fondness for this would-be treat.  We'll see how that goes...

I Can Crochet Day

And I can.  Maybe I will.  For the rest of you who can, there are people in need of scarves, hot pads, dish cloths, and yes, even doilies.  So use your talents to make the world a more...crochet-clad place.

Coming Attractions: Poultry Day, National Chocolate Carmel Day, Let's Laugh Day

 - Also, I learned that yesterday - March 17 - was not, in fact, St. Patrick's Day.  At least not this year.  Apparently due to the fact that Easter is early this year, yesterday was Palm Monday and the Catholic church has an aversion to overlapping "religious" holidays, and thus changed ol' Pat's Day to Saturday the 12th.  I regret that I missed that one.  But really?  St. Patrick's Day has always been on the 17th, and I don't know that I trust the judgement of an organization that decorates their churches with people's skulls.

March 17 is...

St. Patrick's Day

Bust out all your green, unless you're one of those annoying subtle people who tries to wear green underwear or a ring with a green stone in an attempt to deceive the rest of us.  Personally I'm all about just going for broke and wearing as much green as possible.  If I had green pants, I'd wear them.  How St. Patrick's Day came about is kind of interesting, but I'll leave it up to you to discover that for yourself.  So, green it up cause I'll be on the lookout and at the ready.

Submarine Day

Hmmmm...It think maybe I'll take a bath and pretend to be a Russian submarine spy, or perhaps an adventurous marine biologist.  For those of you who've lost your sense of imagination, here's some boring text disguised as interesting info.

March 16 is...

National Artichoke Hearts Day

I love artichoke hearts.  There's just no other way to say it.  I find them to be entirely delicious.  On pizza, in pasta, paired with spinach in a dip - they're delightful.  Go out there and get yourself some.  They really good for you too.

Everything You Do is Right Day

Today it can't go wrong - even if it does go wrong, it's still right!  How awesome is that?  I'm going to attempt a difficult recipe today, and maybe be a little more adventurous in my wardrobe choices.  I think I can pull it off.  Nay - I know I can pull it off because everything I do is right today.

Tumbleweed Day

I don't find tumbleweeds all that fascinating.  Of course I grew up in an area replete with them.  In fact I took a bus trip once and during part of the journey the road was completely covered in them.  It looked like some other-worldly tumbleweed exodus.  But they have been slightly romanticized due to Western movies, and I always appreciate it when a person pretends to be a tumbleweed to add that certain rustic element to a given situation.  Go out there and find a tumbleweed.  Maybe get one stuck in the radiator vent on your car, and then name it and see how long it stays there...not that I've done that or anything...

Buzzard's Day

I say let them celebrate it however they want.

National Pears Helene Day

This might be the only way to eat a pear, once you've tasted it.  I think anything with "helene" in the title at least deserves a second glance.  Go ahead, cook up a batch and see what you think.

The Ides of March

Really it just means the middle of March, but thanks to a couple of famous ancient people, it's now taken on a different connotation.  I'd explain the whole thing here, but wikipedia has already done the work, so I'll let them take the credit.

March 14 is...

National Potato Chip Day

I think potato chips are really at their best when combined with dip. But mostly the plain ones. My favorite flavored chips used to be sour cream and onion, however those were ousted by sour cream and cheddar. Mmmm... Though my favorite chips are Sunchips, which technically aren't potato chips. But I digress. Grab a bowl of chips and go to town.

Irish American Day

I'm really not a fan of compartmentalizing Americans by root nationalities. I think it promotes disunity. But in the spirit of the day, find your favorite redhead, give them a kiss, a high five, a pat on the back, inordinate amounts of cash, whatever.

Pi Day

As is 3.14. We've had enough of the other pie for a while, I think. Today you can certainly eat pie, just be sure you measure the circumference beforehand.

March 3 is...

So, apparently I skipped a day.  It's been a crazy weekend.  Also, I will be out of town for the next week and a half, so today's post will simply be a list of what's coming up over the next 10 days.  Enjoy!

I Want You to be Happy Day

Focus a bit on others today.  Don't worry so much about your own level of contentment.  That will follow.  Ask, "Is there anything I can do to help?", "What can I do for you?", "Would you like to share my brownie?" etc. etc. etc.

National Anthem Day

I personally think that our national anthem is pretty much awesome.  Today might be a good day to brush up on the lyrics.  Also, do you even know the story behind the national anthem?  Well find out!  And it also might be a good day to learn about other national anthems.

National Cold Cuts Day

Go to a deli.  Get a sandwich.

National Pig Day

Welcome to March! And what better way to start off the new month than celebrating swine? Visit a farm, eat some ham, and eat a lot. Pigs are fun...right?

Peanut Butter Lover's Day

Again - peanut butter is not my favorite, so today is not my day. It's a day for all you PB lovers out there. Go celebrate yourself and your abnormal obsession with the peanut paste.

National Fruit Compote Day

I don't really like the word "compote". I think it's too close to "compost." Nevertheless, someone felt it necessary to have a compote day. The only place I know to even get compote is IHOP. So, I guess if you're into that sort of thing, go get yourself some compote. Or make your own.
