National Tapioca Day

"Oh the big red letter stands for the Jell-O family, yes the big red letter stands for the Jell-O family.  Jell-O yum yum yum, Jell-O pudding yum yum yum, Jell-O tapioca pudding try all three!"  I love tapioca pudding.  Probably because it contains inordinate amounts of sugar.  I think it's best served fresh, warm, and topped with whipped cream.

Paul Bunyan Day

Ah that icon of American Lumberjacking life...or Canadian Lumberjacking life...either way he has a really cool blue pet ox.

National Orange Blossom Day

This citrusy floral delight, a true wonder of nature.  Enjoy this one as well.

Sun Glasses Day

Sun glasses are important because they protect your eyes form harmful radiation.  They're like sunscreen for your eyes - really.  If you don't own a pair, you should.  If you own a pair and don't wear them, you should.

I don't even know what a praline is.  I know they're put in ice cream.  And that's all I have.

Museum Comes to Life Day

I think we should visit museums and just see them figuratively come to life.  You know, find inspiration and aspire to be a better person etc.  Or you could just watch "Night at the Museum."

National Pink Day

Real men don't wear pink, or do they?  Today's the day to find out.  I don't think I even own any pink, but I'm sure I'll figure something out.  Maybe I'll just be a pink supporter until next year.

Soap Opera Day

My mom used to watch these all the time, which made me mad because I wanted cartoons, but whaddya do?  Now I just make fun of them.  And will so continue to do.

National Peaches and Cream Day

I can't think of a more delectable combination of foods.  So simple, yet so completely delicious.  To of my favorite ways to do the peaches and cream combo are 1 - Peaches and milk.  Blanch and skin the peaches, slice 'em up, put 'em milk, top 'em with a bit of sugar and you're golden.  The other way is to take heavy whipping cream and whip it so it thickens, but not whipped.  Add sugar and enjoy.

June 20 is...

Ice Cream Soda Day

Not to be confused with National Ice Cream Soda Day in August.  No, today's just an ordinary Ice Cream Soda Day, but a good one nonetheless.  Today's the day to explore the soda/ice cream mixture beyond the bound of the traditional root beer or cola float.  Try some fruity soda flavors, or maybe mix the ice cream up a bit.  I had a chocolate root beer float once - it wasn't bad.

National Vanilla Milkshake Day

No reason to reinvent the wheel.  This is just a classic, and in a rather serendipitous string of events I had a vanilla milkshake in Mexico and it ended up being one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted.  So let's all go old school today.

Plain Yogurt Day

I've never eaten plain yogurt, but my Dad did in Europe once and almost gagged.  That's probably why I never have...and never will.  But for those of you stalwart adventurists out there, this may be something you'd like to try.  And I say more power to you!

What a great way to get from here to there!  Just saunter along as if you hadn't a care in the world!  A leisurely stroll through life!  And what a perfect time of year to accomplish such a wonderful perambulation!

Monarch Butterfly Day

Ah that iconic beacon of the insect world.  I remember trying to catch monarch butterflies in elementary school, though they very well could have been those moths that look like monarchs as a means of protection. Either way, it's a pleasant memory for a pleasant day.

National Fudge Day

My grandma always gives me fudge for Christmas, and I love it!  It's one of my favorite sugary things to eat.  If you're ever in Disneyworld (and probably Disneyland, though I've never bothered to find out) I suggest going to the confectionary on Main Street USA and sampling their cookie dough fudge.  One of the best things ever invented.

National Hollerin' Contest Day

Evidently this happens in North Carolina, but there's nothing stopping the rest of us from celebrating wherever we are.  So go ahead - yell yer guts out!

Fresh Veggies Day

I prefer eating whole foods as they're much better for you than the processed junk peddled everywhere.  And veggies are an excellent way to do that.  So go to the grocery store, an organic supermarket - or even better, the local farmer's market and root out some of your favorites.  You won't regret it!

National Lobster Day

I once bought a lobster for my birthday and cooked it.  It was sort of an anticlimactic experience.  But then I went on a cruise and had a lobster cooked by someone who knew what they were doing and it was much better.  I recommend lobster if you've got the time and the cash.  And here's a bit about our lobster friends.

Smile Power Day

They say that smiles are contagious and I'm a firm believer in that theory.  So start an epidemic today!  You'll never know the power of one simple smile.

Spill the Salt Day

This is connected with an ancient superstition designed to deter wasting salt.  But in our day of decadence I guess we can celebrate by spilling all the salt we want!  Hooray!

Blame Someone Else Day

Blame Someone Else Day is one of those inconsistent holidays.  It happens the first Friday the 13th every year.  So, it's always on a Friday, and it's always on the 13th, but it's never in the same month.
Anyway...today, blame somebody else for everything.  If it's good stuff, you can blame me.  If it's bad stuff, I recommend blaming Canada.

Friday the 13th!

Spooky.  I'm not superstitious at all, but once when I was in 7th grade there was a big Friday the 13th shindig at the rollerskating rink.  I went with a couple of friends, ended up getting $30 stolen...and a headache.  It was lame.

National Juggling Day

I can sort of juggle.  I have a friend who's an amazing juggler.  It's kind of fun to at least try, so I recommend that today.

Sewing Machine Day

See what new and fantastic wonders you can create with this marvel of modern technology.  It sure made the textile industry boom.  I just mine for a little personal tailoring of clothing that doesn't fit exactly as I'd like it to.  And to me, that's worth it.

Kamehameha Day

This is a public holiday in Hawaii celebrating Kamehameha the Great who established the unified kingdom of Hawaii*.  So if you're feeling a bit tropical today then bust out your hula skirt and tiki torches for a rockin' celebration of one of Hawaii's finest.

Name Your Poison

Of course this is just a euphamistic way of asking what kind of alcoholic drink you'd like, but I guess it's not too far off the mark eh?  My personal poison includes one tall glass of unadulterated chocolate milk. mmm...

Shoo Fly Day

This particular day makes me think of two songs - "Shoo fly don't bother me," and, "Skip to my Lou."  Some say things songs are about diseases and their various means of dissipation.  Wikipedia thinks this.  You decided which you'd like to believe and get your fly-swatters ready.

National Chocolate Ice Cream Day

Yes!!!  I love chocolate ice cream!  I think this might call for a trip to Cold Stone.  So, funny story.  Several years ago I was working as a schlep for Disney in Florida.  To spice things up I would often tell guests about random holidays.  On June 7th I happened to be working in a gift shop and would say, "Happy National Chocolate Ice Cream Day!  Go celebrate!"  I was amazed at how many people asked if free ice cream was being given away somewhere.  I just wanted to say, "Are you kidding?  Disney give something away?  Ha!"  But I just politely said, "No.  But you should go get some ice cream and celebrate anyway."

Accordion Lover's Day

How appropriate during National Accordion Awareness Month.  Well, all I know is that my 11-year old cousin plays the accordion and it rocks.  So, let's all appreciate this dying art a bit more.  It really is just amazing.

Here's a good explanation of what this day is all about.  Enjoy.
